Hot Weather Tips for Horses

  • Keep plenty of fresh water available at all times.
  • Add electrolytes to your horse’s feed to replenish important ions lost through sweat.
  • Hang fans in the stalls and in the barn to help circulate air and keep insects out.
  • Ensure there is plenty of shade for horses outside during the day.
  • Fly masks and fly spray can be used to lessen the irritation from insects. 
  • Work your horse earlier in the day or later in the evening when it starts to cool off.
  • Watch your horse to ensure that he or she is sweating appropriately.
